York runs a self-contained campus a little outside the city walls, with colleges, lakes and most teaching within walking distance. It joined the Russell Group in 2012 and is research-intensive across sciences and social sciences.
Students who want a quieter city than Manchester or Birmingham often shortlist York. The city is small, walkable and has a low crime rate, though the rental market is tight and worth securing early.
